The Youth Affairs Unit of the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) created to impact, inspire and empower youth by establishing a true commitment to character, positive attitude and a sense of purpose through education, personal wellbeing and recreation, on the 12th of October 2018 organized a National University Debate Championship among sixteen universities.
The debate among the universities was meant to select luminous debaters from participating universities who will form part of a team of delegation to represent Liberia in the Republic of Tanzania at the transnational Pan African Debate Championship in December of this year. The Cuttington University debate team being the winner of this tournament automatically sealed their inclusion among those to represent Liberia at the transnational Pan African Debate Championship in Tanzania, in December of this year.
The Cuttington University Debate team clinched the trophy before the eyes of sixteen universities which participated in the tournament, including the University of Liberia (UL), United Methodist University (UMU), African Methodist Episcopal University (AMEU), African Methodist Episcopal Zion University (AMEZU), Grand Bassa Community College (GBCC), Smythe Institute, Stella Maris Polytechnic, C.B. Bashell University, among other participating universities.
The Cuttington University Debate Team under the guardianship of Kusee L Armstrong (Coach) has always brought smugness to the University on countless occasions. In 2015, the CU debate team won a debate organized by the Liberia Anti Corruption Commission (LACC). The team again in 2016 also won UMU here in Suakoko in another debate, and was named winner again at that time. The team performance was exceptional beyond imagination.
Speaking to newsmen after the victory, Kusee L. Armstrong who is the coach for the team expressed gratitude over the performance of his team. He noted that said performance proves the ‘true’ meaning of what Cuttington University stands for. He commended the players for being focus and discipline during the competition. He thanked the University’s administration through its President for the level of support accorded the team during the competition.
Also, speaking to newsmen recently, the captain of the CU Debate Team MOlivia Precious Livingstone, thanked especially the President of the University, Dr. Herman B. Browne for showing up at the final of the debate to watch his students clinching the trophy.
Olivia noted that the presence of the University’s President added an additional motivation for the player, thereby giving them the vigor to win the championship.
“The victory did not come as a surprise, because Cuttington University has always encouraged academic excellence; that is why it is called the ‘CITADEL’ of excellence in higher education in Liberia and West Africa”, Miss Livingstone asserted. Olivia than called on the University to support the initiative, something she said promotes the true spirit of intellectualism amongst students.
Members of the CU’s Debate Team that clinched this illustrious National Debate Championship include: Olivia Precious Livingstone, Captain, Martin Takpor, Preston Nganamah, Emmanuel W. Gesee, Buelah Nimene, Moses Campbell Dennis, Mohammed Fofana, Kerry Kennedy, Ansumana Bility, Samuel McIntosh, and Helena Paye, while Mr. Kusee L. Armstrong headed the team as coach.
