Cuttington University during last weekend matriculated nearly four hundred freshman students into its undergraduate programs for Semester I, 2018/2019 academic school year. An academic tradition long inherited by Cuttington University, the matriculation program serves as a platform to welcome and introduce the incoming freshman students to the many traditional and cultural academic doctrines and principles upon which the university is built.
The program, held during last weekend, commenced with the traditional "Bon Fire Night" on Saturday, November 24, 2018, was climaxed with the customary Church Service at the Samuel D. Ferguson Auditorium (G-Stand). The event was an opportunity to highlight both incoming freshman students and outgoing senior students, groomed in their distinct normal black and white regalia. A major event in the program included the appearance of the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Mr. Shefiu Dabiri. Mr. Dabiri, who is also a senior lecturer of History and International Relations at the college's central campus, presented the students to the University's President, Dr. Herman B. Browne for his official recognition of the candidates for matriculation.
Receiving the students, the CU President expressed his gratitude to the matriculating students who have chosen Cuttington University. In his own words, "it was no mistake that the students were prompted to enroll at CU." He reminded his jubilating scholars, "At CU, quality is sought rather than quantity." He also used the occasion to encourage and challenge the new students to prioritize every aspect of their learning process while they steadily pursue their academic sojourn. Among other things, the CU Manager reasserted the university's responsibilities to not just develop the students' minds, intellect and skills, but also to build their character, morals, virtue, integrity and talent.
Emphasizing on the students' learning process, the CU President maintained "Students who have been admitted at the university should do away with the issue of 'spying;' noting that though the issue of spying is an old-age academic tradition in many Liberian schools, but it does not in any way help to develop a student's academic and intellectual qualities; therefore, they should completely do away with it."
Meanwhile, during the Sunday Service of the matriculation program, the Guest Preacher, Rev. Alphonso A. Dean, Founder and Senior Pastor of the Christian Mission Assembly Church, delivered an inspiring sermon on the theme: "The Secret To Pursuance Success," with text taken from the Old Testament Book of Daniel 7:9-14. Delivering his astute sermon, Rev. Dean advised the students to be morally upright as they endeavor to pursue their academic sojourn at the university; noting "it is only when you conduct yourself in a proper manner and forget about the many good things of the world would you be able to make a great difference in the society."
At the same time, presenting the freshman students to the University's President, the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Mr. Shefiu Dabiri, pledged the university's unwavering academic support and commitment to developing the students' analytical skills, academic wisdom and intellectual qualities in every way possible that will allow them to have a fair chance in competing with other students on the basis of their own ideas. He acknowledged that as long as these students remain students of Cuttington University, the university will ensure that they become the best in order to adequately represent the image of the institution.
Historically, as an institution of higher learning in Liberia, Cuttington University was established on February 22, 1889. Since its establishment, the university has produced and continues to produce more qualified individuals in different walks of life through its several academic and intellectual disciplines offered at various colleges within the institution.
